Dip into Summer Fun

French Onion dip, aka “California Dip,” was all the rage in the 1950’s. All it took was an advertising campaign featuring Lipton’s French Onion soup. While this dip may still be a staple, we have come a long way since then.

Dips remain extremely popular, and you would be hard pressed to attend a party or picnic this summer where a dip is not on the menu. The beauty of dips is just how fast and easy they can be made. Many ingredients used for dips are common pantry staples and can be stocked in advance for any last-minute party needs. Dips are extremely versatile, easy to serve, and offer a variety of flavor and textures – not to mention the multiple options for dipping, from fruits and vegetables to whole grain crackers and chips.

Obviously, dips can vary widely in their nutritional value depending on their ingredients. Some are rich in healthy fats, protein, and vitamins, while others can be high in calories, saturated fat, and sodium.

Obviously, you can pick up hummus, eggplant caponata, tzatziki or any number of delicious dips at McCaffrey’s. But, if time allows, keep in mind that homemade dips do offer some advantages. You can control ingredients, such as sodium, fat, and added sugars. Homemade dips can be customized to dietary needs and taste preferences. While making a dip does take some effort, the fresh and tasty flavor can’t be beat. For those do-it-yourselfers, look at some ingredients that maximize taste and nutrition.
